One man is dead and another is in critical condition after a gunman opened fire at an Alabama hospital before fatally shooting himself, police said early Thursday morning. The episode, WBRC Fox 6 reported, took place on the second floor of the UAB Highlands Hospital about 7 p.m. A gunman reportedly shot two male hospital employees before turning the gun on himself.
Russia: At least 64 dead in massive Russian mall fire, report says
MOSCOW – With the fire alarms silent and staff reportedly nowhere to be seen, a fire at a shopping mall packed with children and their parents on the first weekend of the school recess killed 64 people in Russia's Siberia. The fire at the Winter Cherry mall in Kemerovo, a city about 1,900 miles east of Moscow, was extinguished by Monday morning after burning through the night. Firefighters were still recovering bodies as parts of the buildings were still smoldering. Some of the dead were found inside a cinema, which one witness said had been locked shut.
SK: South Korean president visits Emirates nuclear plant
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates – South Korean President Moon Jae-in has visited a nuclear power plant his country is building in the United Arab Emirates. The state-run WAM news agency reported Monday that Abu Dhabi's powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan traveled with Moon to the Barakah nuclear power plant. On the trip, closed to other media, the two leaders declared work on the first reactor at Barakah complete.
Robbery: Gun-toting woman shot by NYPD officers after alleged crime spree, reports say
A gun-toting woman was shot by New York City police officers Sunday after a weekend crime spree that began when she allegedly choked a parent at a school play, reports said. Lori Gjenashaj, 41, was shot in the shoulder at around 12:45 p.m. after police received a 911 call about a woman breaking into a Staten Island home, NYPD Chief of Patrol Rodney Harrison said. Police conducted a traffic stop of a black SUV that Gjenashaj was driving and when officers approached the vehicle she brandished a firearm, authorities said. Officers then fired five rounds at her, striking her once in the shoulder.
Food: Canadian restaurant waiter claims he was fired based on his French culture
A French waiter at a Canadian restaurant accused his former employer of discrimination based on his culture after being fired for “aggressive, rude and disrespectful” demeanor. Guillaume Rey filed a complaint with British Columbia's Human Rights Tribunal against Vancouver's Milestones Restaurant and its parent company, Cara Operations, claiming “discrimination against my culture,” CBC reported Saturday. Rey worked as “shift lead” at the restaurant, where his duties included supervising other waiters, according to the outlet. He was fired in August 2016 after an incident that left one of the servers “borderline in tears,” the restaurant manager said

Health: Obesity tied to shorter life, overweight people more years with heart disease
Obese people have shorter lives and even those who are just overweight spend more years living with heart disease than individuals who are a healthy weight, a U.S. study suggests. Researchers examined data on more than 190,000 adults from 10 different studies conducted in the U.S. over the past seven decades that looked at weight and other factors that can influence the risk of heart disease. None of the participants had cardiovascular disease when they joined these studies, but at least 70 percent of men and about 60 percent of women aged 40 and older were overweight or obese.
World: Slovak journalist likely the victim of contract killing
BRATISLAVA, Slovakia – A Slovak prosecutor says circumstances in the deaths of an investigative journalist and his fiancee suggest it was a contract killing. The prosecutor in a rare statement to reporters on Monday also said the two were killed on Feb. 21. The bodies of Jan Kuciak and Martina Kusnirova were found in their house four days later.
