12-year-old shot while sleeping in southwest Birmingham home
A young boy was shot while he was asleep inside his southwest Birmingham home early Monday. Birmingham police said shots were fired about 3 a.m. into the home at 301 14th Street S.W. Multiple rounds struck the 12-year-old boy. He was home with his grandmother. "This situation is troubling in and of itself because you have someone willfully shooting into a families' home," said Birmingham police Sgt. Bryan Shelton. "The fact that the victim was a child only adds more sorrow. It is obvious the shooter doesn't care." This is crazy, he's probably just a grade under me.
Crime: Juvenile detention officer charged in teenager's death
MIAMI – An officer at a Florida juvenile detention center is facing federal charges after a 17-year-old died in a beating by other inmates that was encouraged by the officer. An indictment unsealed Monday accuses Antwan Lenard Johnson of conspiracy and deprivation of the teenager's rights under color of law. Johnson was due in court later Monday. It wasn't immediately clear if he has a lawyer. He should have just stepped in.
Terror: Man faces sentencing for assisting in terror plot
NEWARK, N.J. – A New Jersey man is scheduled to be sentenced in federal court for aiding in a terror plot. Nader Saadeh pleaded guilty in 2015 to conspiracy to provide support to a foreign terrorist organization. He's facing a maximum of 15 years in prison when he appears in a Newark court on Monday. Saadeh's brother, Alaa, received a 15-year sentence in 2016. I wish the world would just be peaceful.
Odd news: Oregon trucker missing for days emerges from wilderness
Authorities say a trucker who was missing for four days has walked out of the Oregon wilderness safely. Jacob Cartwright, 22, got lost after his GPS sent him the wrong way, State Police Sgt. Kaipo Raiser said.Cartwright’s truck was reportedly full of potato chips when it got stuck in an area with limited cell phone coverage, his boss said. The trucker started walking back in the direction from which he had come -- without any food or water -- just after midnight Wednesday, wading through snow at some points. This is crazy.

But before those short links disappear, scammers continue to take full advantage of them with a little help from Google Maps. Security company Sophos discovered that scammers are using a vulnerability in Google Maps URLs. It's known as an open redirect vulnerability and allows an otherwise safe link to redirect to another page without the user's knowledge. It also bypasses all the safety checks Google performs when creating a new short URL.
